Workstation Policy
our evolving opinion on the ideal usesthis.com scenario
In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, our workstation policy is evolving due to remote-only work conditions for extended durations through the year. Ideally, we'd like to equip our engineers and employees with the best possible hardware and software. However, this is easier said than done in a group scenario. In this context, our goal is to set a reasonable bar of expectations with respect to your workstation.
Laptop
We have two recommendations.
MacBook Air (M1, 2020)
Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Intel Core i5 14" FHD Laptop (8GB RAM/ 128GB SSD / Win 10/ Black)
These (or equivalent) laptops are functional, convenient, and essentially, effective. We don't like relying on the extra compute power from a top-of-the-line model to save us from running around in hoops while debugging Scala code. We try to make better decisions in how we organize, and create value. Modern laptops like the above are quite powerful, and can do quite a bit with the right usage. We really like it when you make qualitatively better decisions at work, rather than competing on specs.
Ergonomics
Whether you are working from home, or from the office - we have one ask - prioritize your ergonomics. Every six months, we recommend re-evaluating and upgrading components of your ergonomic setup, including a good desk, chair, monitor and injury-repellant keyboard and mice until you find something that you really like.
These vary from individual to individual, but we suggest some general rules here.
Although we don't like admitting it, Ikea has a reasonably sturdy and purposeful range of desks for getting started.
Chairs with extensive lumbar support are a must. There will be times when you will thank us for it. If you are starting with an entry-level model for your chair, do ensure you do biannual upgrades.
Get the largest monitor screen size you can find, unless you prefer dual monitor setups. We recommend the high end range from BenQ for professional single-monitor usage (the BenQ PD3200u is a good bet). For dual monitor setups, we recommend the Dell professional range.
We've tried the mechanical clickety-clack of the Das Keyboards and similar ranges. If you like it, go for it. We also suggest thinking about cable-free flexibility and multi-machine KVM setup among others (try the Logitech K480).
Headphones - Sony or Bose noise cancelling wireless headphones only.
Software
Jetbrains Intellij suite or VS Code.
